This Japanese Skiver Knife, made in Japan by Michihamono (in cooperation with Osaka's Leathercraft Phoenix cooperation) is a truly unique leather tool in that is is perfectly symmetrical, allowing it to be used by both left and right handed people. This knife brings together the finest traditions of Michihamono, one of Japan's premier wood carving tool makers, and the leathercrafting expertise of Pheonix, to create a truly unique Japanese utility knife.

This tool a has sharp blade forged from high-speed steel, which has excellent hardness and corrosion resistance, enhancing its usefulness when cutting and skiving leather and keeping its sharpness for a long time even with repeated usage. The blade is attached to a handle made of smoked oak wood, which is weather resistant, not prone to chipping, and is extremely strong and sturdy.

Previously, it was necessary to choose between left or right handed leather cutting tools based on the user's dominant hand, but by making the blade of this tool symmetrical, the problem is solved because it is now in a shape that anybody can use. This tool includes a blade sheath for secure storage and protection of the cutting edge. The sharpness and blade holding are exceptional, and once you start using it, you won't be able to go back to traditional leather knives.

To cut leather, lay it on a quality cutting mat, then push the proper corner of the blade into the leather and draw the knife towards you, twisting the blade in the direction you want to cut. Please ensure that your blade is cutting both the mat and the leather to maintain control and avoid the danger of slippage. While cutting around curves, pitch the knife handle away from you for better control, and when cutting straight lines, pitch the blade handle towards you for straighter lines and more effective cutting.

For skiving, position your leather flesh side up on a hard surface that the blade cannot cut, such as glass, with the edge you want to skive facing away from you. Cut your leather outwards or across from where you want the skive to begin straight through to the edge of the leather, holding the knife with the bevel facing upwards and the edge of the blade facing in the same way as the edge of the leather, or at a slight angle as chosen.
