This traditional Japanese utility knife is great for skiving, but is perfect for cutting intricate patterns in leather more effectively than with knives where the bevel is straight. Quality made in Japan. For left handers.
The single bevel of the angled blade is as can be seen on the picture. It is designed for left handed people, however, some people who are right handed prefer the bevel on the side of the blade shown in the picture as it helps them skiver leather with the aid of their thumb more effectively.
To cut leather simply place your leather onto a quality purpose made cutting mat, then insert the appropriate corner of the blade into your leather and pull the knife towards you, twisting the blade in the direction you wish to cut. Please ensure your blade is cutting the mat as well as your leather to ensure control and reduce the risk of slippage. When turning the knife around corners while cutting, pitch the handle of the knife away from you for more control, and when cutting in straight lines pitch the handle of the blade towards you for straighter lines and more efficient cutting.
For skiving place your leather flesh side up with the edge you wish to skive facing away from you on a hard surface the blade cannot cut, such as glass. Holding the knife with the bevel facing upwards and the edge of the blade facing in the same direction of the edge of the leather, or at a slight angle as preferred, cut your leather outwards or across from where you would like the skive to begin straight through to the edge of the leather.
Hand crafted and made from high quality steel, this knife is tempered on the inside of the blade and annealed on the other surface giving you an exceptionally sharp blade that will last many years.
The knife is made of Blue #2 steel (also called Aogami #2). This type of metal is sought after and made from Japanese pure sand irons. It has 1.10 ~ 1.20 high carbon with 0.20 ~ 0.50 Chromium. This has better edge retention and has better ability to take a more acute edge than Shirogami (White Steel). The handle is made from Poplar Tree wood.
The blade measures 36mm in width (1.4) with the cutting edge slightly longer owing to the angle. As with all Japanese blades, please ensure that it is kept dry and is stored in a manner that will prevent the cutting edge from contacting hard surfaces.
